Dear Evan Hansen The Novel

When I heard about this novel coming out, I immediately pre-ordered one. I’ve been obsessed with the Broadway musical for a year now. Listening to the songs daily, watching online performances of the cast etc etc… This novel gives so much more dept to the character Evan Hansen and that gives a new perspective when you know/have seen the musical. I’ve received the novel at 4 PM and finished reading it, the same day, at 11 PM. It was amazing.

Dear Evan Hansen,

Today’s going to be an amazing day and here’s why…

When a letter that was never meant to be seen by anyone draws high school senior Evan Hansen into a family’s grief over the loss of their son, he is given the chance of a lifetime: to belong. He just has to stick to a lie he never meant to tell, that the notoriously troubled Connor Murphy was his secret best friend.

Suddenly, Evan isn’t invisible anymore–even to the girl of his dreams. And Connor Murphy’s parents, with their beautiful home on the other side of town, have taken him in like he was their own, desperate to know more about their enigmatic son from his closest friend. As Evan gets pulled deeper into their swirl of anger, regret, and confusion, he knows that what he’s doing can’t be right, but if he’s helping people, how wrong can it be?

No longer tangled in his once-incapacitating anxiety, this new Evan has a purpose. And a website. He’s confident. He’s a viral phenomenon. Every day is amazing. Until everything is in danger of unraveling and he comes face to face with his greatest obstacle: himself.

A simple lie leads to complicated truths in this big-hearted coming-of-age story of grief, authenticity and the struggle to belong in an age of instant connectivity and profound isolation. Source.

My Thoughts

As mentioned before, the detailed descriptions of the social fear that Evan experiences, is the best part of Dear Evan Hansen The Novel. The way he thinks about every social interaction he has or might have, is so relatable to me (and a lot of other people, I assume). Being scared your hands are too sweaty, that you’ll say something silly or that the answer from the other person won’t be to your liking. All these tiny fears can make social interactions so difficult. It’s a good thing that this book sheds a light on this with a little touch of humor.

Whilst reading, your heart will sob. The story is heartbreaking on so many levels. One of my favorite parts was that we got to know the backstory behind Connor. We got to know another side of him – that made me love this character even more.

Please, please go read this book. Even if you don’t know the story of Dear Evan Hansen at all. This novel is not only explaining fears that a lot of teenagers struggle with, but also the impact of social media and how this can affect teenagers while going through difficult times. I would give this book a 11/10 if I could. The story, the characters and the writing-style are all amazing and thoroughly thought out. Go read this book!
